About this blog
This blog is about start-ups and entrepreneurship. My main motivation is to share my own experiences as a founder with others in the hope that it will help others achieve their own dreams.
What’s up with the name? Well, here is a bit of an explanation.
- The phrase “Condemn me, it does not matter. history will absolve me,” is the concluding remark in a speech made by Fidel Castro in as part of his court defense while on trial for leading the 1953 attack on the Moncada Barracks which marked the beginning of the Cuban Revolution.
- My father went to law school with Fidel Castro (they are not related) and eventually found himself opposing Fidel’s revolution which caused him to flee to the United States.
- I grew up in Miami. The #1 thing you learn growing up in Miami is Fidel Castro is bad and communism is evil.
- Starting a company is a bit like starting a revolution. You need a compelling vision. You need to convince people to join. It’s very hard. There will be set-backs. If you pull it off, fame and fortune await you.
- If you start a company, you must prepare yourself for those who will criticize your idea, will tell others why you don’t have the skills required to achieve your vision, if you suffer set backs your friends will shun you. If you fail, you will likely be judged harshly by many for your “failure.” In a lot of ways, this is what any rebel or revolutionary will face.
- So I felt the phrase “history absolve me” seems to fit with the notion of an entrepreneur who is chasing a vision with lots of people criticizing him (or her) and pointing out all the weaknesses. In the end, the best way to shut these people up is to prove them wrong by building the business. If you succeed, that will be your absolution. So just keep believing that you can pull it off, and history will absolve you too.
- I have an ironic sense of humor. So the idea of naming a blog about start-ups (a capitalist endeavor) after a phrase uttered by a famous communist, one I was raised to despise, and with whom I share a last name and common history, really tickled me.
